Earlier this week as I tacked a fresh calendar on the wall it reminded me of the many expectations and hopes tacked to a new calendar year. A host of resolutions ranging from those to improve our health and quality of life to those commitments to our relationships become focal points in many lives. Some of these were needful and had been put off, while others arose out of the charity, times with family, and refocus that comes through the Christmas season.
However, none have the eternal effect as that of the resolve to focus upon our relationship with the Lord. There are several opportunities toward that end in the months ahead to assist you as we embark upon a season at the church where we will partner with the Lord to build a lasting legacy in the Faith for ourselves and generations to come. As we draw nearer to Him, He guides and strengthens us to both be and enroll others to be His disciples setting the framework for the years to come.
In this first quarter we will focus upon the ‘E’ word - Evangelism. Our Growth Groups begin next week with a parish wide study to look at how we can practically be the ‘fisher’s of men’ that Jesus calls us to be as His disciples. It will be a time to address our fears or prejudices, become equipped, and begin to look earnestly at this area of our walk with the Lord. A preaching series in February around the topic, workshop day and guest speakers, and an easy outreach opportunity later in the month are designed to assist and encourage us. Please make these a priority, as it is the second half of our mission statement at the church - to be disciples who make disciples of Jesus Christ. But perhaps more importantly, in this day and age, there are countless folks looking for what you and I have found in relationship with the Lord and in the loving community of faith we know as Saint Barnabas. You may find the dates in the Save the Dates flyers around the church and included in the Encourager.
We will then have an opportunity to put all of our preparation into practice. At our Annual Meeting we explore what God has placed before us as we partner with Him to build a legacy for years to come. My friends, you will not want to miss out on the exciting leg of this journey with the Lord that will establish the framework for growth! It is an exciting season at Saint Barnabas and one that will have an eternal effect. We are transformed in His image as we further grow in what is so dear to the Lord through reaching the lost, while also enabling others to find the hope, community, and relationship with the Lord we have found here.
So as you begin to fill in dates and plans in addition to resolutions for 2017, resolve to invest in the ones that have an eternal effect. Begin by making a Growth Group a priority and saving the dates in February. Don’t miss out on the Annual Meeting on January 22, and as always, partner with me in prayer as we seek the Lord to be faithful stewards of His vineyard in the year to come.
