When we return a portion of what God provides for us, it also does something in us. It draws us nearer to Him. And that is the goal! As Christians, the more we draw near to God through Jesus Christ, the more we grow to become like Him and are enabled to do all that He teaches. We call it discipleship. Yet it flows from God’s love to us and our love toward God. Our theme this year comes from this simple truth, Loving God More Fully in 2016.
There are many ways we love God, and our giving is only one. Yet, it is often our giving that tethers our heart, since many other things vie for it. It anchors us to the only One who can fill our lives with meaning and purpose. As the world offers us a lot that can make our lives more meaningful, purposeful, or complete, we need such grounding.
As we watch our little girl grow and develop, we are always battling those competing messages. If we just invest in this product, it will help her development more fully. If we just invest in this for the future she will be better educated. Or, if we just invest in this system she will have all she needs as she grows. We are inundated by it, as I am sure you can relate! Yet, the truth is that she needs and desires most to love and be loved. We know there is no better way we can fully love her than by receiving God’s love for us and raising her to know Him. There is no better future she can have than discovering what God intended in creating her: to know Him and to make Him known.
At this season of our lives, Michelle and I are discovering that as we tithe, we find joy in knowing this is the best investment we will ever make in our family’s future. Through it, we draw nearer to the Lord and watch with amazement as He multiplies what we offer for His purposes and for growth in our lives and that of others. We also know this is the best legacy we will ever leave for our family. Nothing will outlast the Church and God’s purposes for it, until He returns. And we want to be a part of that!
Amidst all the competition vying for our heart and future as well as that of our family, we have chosen to prioritize around the greatest One. We want the best life, not just a good life. We are certainly not there yet, but we want to further grow to discover it as we love God and love others. We humbly invite you to join us in that journey in the year to come and offer our prayers as you do so.
