We, too, are called to such levels of determination and commitment as we follow Jesus daily. Paul often uses athletic motifs in his letters to illustrate how we are called to train our minds and bodies in righteousness much in the same way that athletes train with a single focus (see 2 Tim. 3:16, 1 Cor. 9:27, Phil. 3:14, 2 Tim. 2:5, 7). Ours is not a competition, rather a daily advancement toward growth in the character of Jesus. With such images in mind, we are reminded that as with any training mere maintaining will not provide the means to reach our goal. We either advance or decline. To assist you in progressing toward the goal of the heavenly prize in Christ Jesus, we have many upcoming offerings this year.
September brings back opportunities for all ages, but we will have a few previews in August before everything starts. The first is quickly approaching in two weeks for our teens. If you have a child going into the sixth through twelfth grade, plan to meet at the church from 4:30-6:30 on August 14th. We will have pizza as parents and teens gather with our new youth group leaders (you will have to come to find out who they are, but will be as pleased as I am when you find out)! There will also be a discussion to finalize plans for their meeting time and some upcoming activities to begin the school year.
Secondly, we will have a gathering for the parents of our school aged children after church on August 28. We plan to have a potluck, so bring a covered dish and your calendar to discover all the ways we will be further building upon children’s ministry this year. We have some new programming, events, and times for the year head. You will not want to miss out on either offering, and I am so excited about both!
Also, you will soon begin to see sign ups for our Growth Groups in the church and online. These groups serve to gather adults in fellowship weekly to train in righteousness alongside one another. There will be several group meeting times available throughout the week, and we plan to add a new Alpha small group for those exploring Christianity, the Bible, and the big questions of life. You may even want to consider this opportunity if you plan on inviting a dechurched or unchurched friend to attend a group with you this fall, or to prepare yourself to better engage such friends and neighbors.
Last but not least, we will do an instructed service on August 28 which serves to help us understand the intention and meaning behind what we do each Sunday, It will be a great day to bring a friend or plan to grab your kids as we walk through the beauty, richness, and timelessness of worship in the Anglican tradition.
These are only a few offerings this month alone! Keep an ‘eye’ on the Encourager as well for upcoming opportunities. Make these events a priority to take time for you and your family to train together in righteousness as we keep our eye on the goal this year in following Jesus. I look forward to training with you!
