While this call is unchanging throughout our lives, our mission fields may vary at different stages. Asking the Lord to reveal where they are right now and for the grace to engage in mission therein is part of our continual discernment. Many times, the field is both right before us by virtue of our walk of life.
For instance, parents with young children can feel as though they will have a better chance to engage in mission when their children are more independent - missing that their children themselves are the mission field at that stage. Perhaps in watching children play and interacting with other parents there is another area in which to engage. As children grow, other mission fields are available through the soccer field, band practices, scouting events or other clubs. The workplace and one’s neighborhood can be difficult places to bring the Gospel into apart from those who live and work there. For others it may be aging parents who are tended to in precious free time, but who may have few visitors otherwise. More obvious are programs and organizations that reach the homeless, those living in difficult situations, and unreached people groups.
The field is ripe for the harvest as Jesus said, but the laborers are few (Luke 10:2). You are called to be a laborer in the harvest. Ask the Lord to reveal your mission field for this season of your life. You maybe in a unique position to bring Christ into an area that others cannot by virtue of your relationships and involvement in various groups and activities. Go to the Lord in prayer, but don’t be surprised when He reveals the field for this season of your life. As He does, ask for the grace and wisdom to boldly bring Christ Jesus therein!
